Are you in love? by Rachel Cosgrove

Because we are so passionate about what we do and care so much about our clients and their success, emotions can drive our decisions. It is so important to be able to separate your emotions from your business. This is not easy to do, especially when you absolutely love what you do; and love is a very strong emotion.

Something to remember is that when emotions are high, intelligence is low. This is true in any scenario in life, not just business. If you are upset or angry, it’s a good idea to step away before you say or do something that may not be an intelligent thing to say or do. Have you ever been in an argument with a loved one and said something you wished you hadn’t? Exactly what I’m talking about.

An example in business might be when you’re desperate for the new client sitting across from you to sign up for your services because you need the money. Being in “high need” is an emotion that will come across in the way you communicate and how you approach the conversation. Never be in “high need.” When you get emotional, detach, and remember it’s a business decision.

This leads to the skill of compartmentalizing or being able to separate what you do professionally from who you are personally. Of course they are very closely tied, but being able to leave anything in your personal life that might affect your emotions at the door when you walk into your business is a very important skill. As the leader of your company you set the tone for your business. You must come in every single day ready to bring it!
